There are so many things to focus on when you start a business that it’s easy to get confused and distracted by all of the noise out there

However, there are some key areas where it’s important and necessary to spend your time and lucky for you, I’m sharing 5 of the key things with you

Get clear on the vision for your business
Your purpose is a huge part of your story as a business owner and is what drives you each and every day to move forward in your business and keep working. Without a purpose, how will you achieve what you truly want? Ask yourself these questions:
- What made you choose to start your business?
- What is it that you want to accomplish through your business?
Hold on to these answers because they will form part of your origin story. Think Spiderman or Harry Potter.

Identify the perfect person for your product or service
Every business needs clients or customers. Without them, you’ll have no money and therefore no business. But not everyone will want or need your product or service or, if they do, they may not want to get it from you. But, there are people out there who want exactly what you have to offer, exactly in the way that you offer it. Your job is to identify those people.
But how do you do that? Start with what you’re offering and then ask yourself these questions;
- What type of person would benefit from that product or service? E.g. a coach, accountant, virtual assistant etc.
- What would prompt them to buy this product or service from you? For example, if you’re a course creator, the thing that would prompt someone to buy from you is someone who wants to create a course, but probably has no idea where to start.

Create a plan for your business
This will help you to keep you focused and set clear goals that will help you to navigate through your business. Because having a successful business is the overarching goal, but there will be additional steps that you will need to take in order to reach that big goal. So get clear on what it is that you want to achieve and then start to break down the steps involved in achieving that goal.

Understand your competition and how you can learn from them
Yes, there is no one else like you (unless you have a twin). But there are other people who are providing the same product and service that you are and your clients know that. So, what can you do to first identify who your competition is. In other words who else does your client see when they are looking for what you offer? And once you’ve identified them, how can you separate yourself from them. Think of all of the big supermarkets in the UK. Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury’s. They are all competitors of each other and in each advert, they say things to separate themselves apart, by doing things like price matching or offering points for shopping with them. They know who their competition is. Now it’s your turn. Who’s your competition?

What’s your gap and how can you fill it?
When you apply for a job, you know what the recruiter is looking for because they tell you the job title and description. Within this description, they set out what they are looking for in an employee and tell you what the role will involve. So doesn’t it make sense to have that same clarity in your business? To know exactly what your role is and what skills you need to be able to perform that role to the best of your ability? Of course it does. So start researching. What does it mean to be a course creator, coach, consultant or author?
So those are the 5 things. Are there more tips and steps that you’ll need to take? Yes, but this is a really great place to start. And the good news for you is that you don’t have to figure out all of the steps by yourself.
